While some want all the noise and ?blings? that come with a car audio system, others are only interested in its basic functions. The AM/FM radio system and cassette player was more or less all that old car audio systems were comprised of. Without a CD player and an MP3, your car audio system is not “current” by modern day standards. You do not have to replace everything in your car audio system in order to upgrade it. When you decide that you are not discarding the speakers you had before, then the new CD or MP3 system can work with them.
