Surveying the Smoky Mountains

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

During the mid-nineteenth century there were early geographical and geological expeditions in the Smoky Mountains that took place. Thomas Lanier Clingman and Dr. Elisha Mitchell became involved in a scholarly feud over which of the mountains in the Southeast was the highest. Before the issue could be resolved, Mitchell was killed in a fall from the slopes of the mountain named for him. Mount Mitchell turned out to be a mere forty-three feet higher than the peak that was named Clingman’s Dome.  Clingman invited the distinguished Swiss-born physical geographer, Arnold Guyot to come to the mountains and study them. Assisted by a local guide, Guyot, conducted the first detailed surveys of the area that are now inside the park.

Facts to Ponder About Celtic Harp

Friday, February 20th, 2009

You must have heard about a Celtic harp. It is that big musical instrument belonging to the string family where only selected few people get to play this instrument. A Celtic harp produces a very distinctive sound, much different than any other harps have. This is because a Celtic harp is strung by three types of materials to produce different unique sounds and these are the wires, the gut and the nylon. If you use wires in your Celtic harp, this will yield a louder and sharper sound while a gut has a more muted sound. Using the nylon in your Celtic sound will not only produce a lighter sound but it is also much convenient. You can easily buy these nylon strings in any musical store.

Impressed by the Alexandria Doumbek

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

My husband and I didn’t have much going on last weekend so we packed a picnic lunch and loaded our two dogs into the car and went to the park.  We really had a nice time, it was a beautiful day.  We were just walking around when we saw a crowd gathering ahead.  We walked over to see what was going on.  There was a man playing a little drum.  It sounded really nice.  My Egyptian and is was called an alexandria doumbek.  He told he wouldn’t mind having one since it looked funn to play.  I know exactly what he is getting for his birthday.

Show of the Year on Broadway

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

Although I am not much of a Broadway expert, I could not believe how great Mama Mia was this year.  The cast of characters was fabulous, and while I have seen it many times before, it was certainly the most enjoyable time for me.  It can be hard to find the tickets to Hot Broadway Shows, so I was glad that I had the presence of mind to book online.  Not only did it make everything quicker and easier, it made the ticket pick up a piece of cake.  All I had to do was go to the box office at the theater and get them!  It was a great time.

If you’ve moved recently you know  that it can be a stressful and hectic time, but it can also be a time for a new beginning, a spacious new place and more. Have you been invited to a house warming party, but don’t have a clue what  to bring for your good friend? Let me provide you some ideas that will help get you started in finding the perfect present to celebrate their new home.

If you are looking for a casual touch, your friend or new neighbor may enjoy personalized house warming presents like a coffee mug. If they enjoy a drink now and then, consider monogrammed cocktail glasses or shot glasses. Country Music Artists – Chris Cagle

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Born in DeRidder, Louisiana, Chris Cagle started his music education early on in life. He took piano lessons for a while and then switched to guitar later on. He moved to Nashville, Tennessee, a center for all country music artists, to pursue a musical career.

Chris Cagle was discovered while working at a restaurant in 2000 and signed a recording deal. Since then, he has produced his first number one hit, I Breathe In, I Breath Out. While this country artist has produced many more hits, this is the only on to make it to the very top. Now that his music career is picking up, we can look forward to more of Chris Cagle’s work.

Lab Results and magic

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

Extensively purified DNA has an A260/A280 ratio of about 1.8 (Farrell, S. and Ranallo, R pg. 412).  Isolated and diluted DNA show ratios of 1.910 and 1.833 respectively.  This leads to the conclusion that our samples were relatively purified.  The three subsequent samples show an increasing ratio as per increased heating and cooling magictricks method.  This is consistent with the hyperchromic effect, as denatured DNA will increase in absorbance as explained in the introductory. This will all be outlined in a later post after all lab results are received and evaluated.

Playing The Perfect Instrument

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

When I was little, I always dreamed about playing some sort of instrument, but my parents never had money to get me one. When I became an adult, I started working overtime so that I could buy my own guitar. I thought that it would be the perfect instrument, because it can play so many different styles of music. I have been developing effortless guitar technique that works for me, so that I can learn better and faster. I love that I can play a country style song one day, and then turn around and play a rock style song the next.
