Analysis On “Chicago Hotel Adopts a No”
Saturday, March 10th, 2012Re: No Tipping as a Policy … HALLELUJAH! Tipping is a dreadful, demeaning custom for giver and receiver.
Yes, I know there are people who rely on best beauty tips because the business model makes it impossible to earn a living any other way.
I’m assuming / hoping that this hotel provides a decent wage and benefits so that they are not taking food off of an employee’s table. And it would, indeed, as K Neilson said, be a very good thing for the no-tipping practice to spread.
I remember traveling to Australia and Japan in the early 1990s where NO tipping was the expectation. Staff were truly embarrassed when you offered a tip and would go to great lengths to refuse it.
The notion of offending someone by refusing a tip is, IMO, hog-wash. Rather, a persistent refusal would, I think, result in increased respect for the staff and the establishment. It’s certainly true for me.
