When I first started teaching, an older colleague took me aside on my first day and said ‘Just remember one thing… being a teacher means being ready for anything.’ As a teacher I’m called on almost every day to be a parent, a guardian, a disciplinarian, a psychologist, a police officer, a referee, and a nurse. It’s all part of the job. And these days of security awareness, I’ve also become something of a school survival expert. The first time we went through a lock-down drill, my eyes were seriously opened, and I knew we were going to need supplies. Now I think I’m ready if we ever really go through a lock-down.
