We women in the horse world often joke about opening ‘day spas’ at our barns. The amount of work in each day that goes into keeping any number of horses healthy and clean is pretty intense. In fact, a good friend of mine was recently admiring my arms as I sported a tank top, and she asked me how to gain muscles at home, like I had apparently done. I couldn’t help it- I had to laugh. Once I had wiped my eyes dry, I invited her to spend a week with me to see if she too could help her muscle tone some. On her first day, which began at dawn, she learned how to move hay bales, (which weigh about fifty pounds each,) clean stalls, wash water buckets, sweep the alleyway, and set up feed for dinner. Not to mention, moving the horses in and out to their respective pastures. She made it three days. By day four, I got a phone call saying she could no longer move. Go figure!
